Address Marking
Time is of the essence in an emergency.
Three very important items are directly related to
reducing fire deaths, loss of property, and providing life saving
measures through our Emergency Medical Services. Early warning via smoke
detectors, rapid notification, and easy identifying of the stricken
resident or business.
Smoke detectors have proven to be a tremendous tool
in early detection. Linking early detection to an alarm system that
automatically calls a dispatch station is becoming a standard throughout
the country.
Lake County is served by Enhanced 911, which shows
the address and other pertinent information on the dispatchers’ computer
screen. Newport Township/Gurnee dispatchers can also provide immediate
life saving procedures such as CPR instructions over the telephone while
awaiting Paramedics to arrive.
Newport Township Fire Protection District has made
great efforts in reducing our response times, including 24 hour staffing
of the station. We use the latest in computerized geographical
information systems to accurately map our district in great detail.
With all of this technology in place to serve you
better, the last item is up to you. It is imperative that your home or
business is properly marked. It is time consuming trying to find a
poorly marked home and adds precious moments to an emergency response.
We are looking for reflective numbers minimally 3 ½ inches tall.
Numbering one side of your mailbox only helps the mail person because we
may be coming from the other direction. Please keep in mind that
mailboxes may not be the best way of marking your home. Sometimes
many mailboxes are ganged together or they are not in front of your
home. We have had some cases where four homes share a common driveway,
or the numbers on the home are simply not visible from the road.
We are here to assist you if you need help in
determining the best way to mark your home or business. As always, we
will install a rural address marker for our cost of twenty dollars.
Please contact Lt. Dave Emanuelson for further information at 336-1080.
