Fire Prevention Bureau
INSPECTIONS
The Fire Prevention Bureau has
been and continues to conduct fire safety inspections throughout Newport
Township. These inspections are annual and our goal is to visit every
business in the Township to insure the safety of the business owners,
employees, and patrons. Our thanks goes out to the businesses we have
inspected for the great cooperation we have had thus far and look
forward to those who we will meet this year. We would like you to
understand that our fire inspectors are trying to prevent a fire from
ruining your business and of course prevent anyone from injury. A few
simple precautions can make the difference. We are pleased at how the
businesses in Newport Township are complying with the building and fire
codes, keeping them safe for all of us.
PLAN REVIEW / BUILDING
INSPECTIONS
Why does the fire department assess a charge on new construction?
The Newport Township Fire Protection District
provides Emergency Services to all residents of Newport Township for;
Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Materials, Below Ground
Rescue, Trench Rescue, Structural Collapse, In-water, High Angle, and
all other areas of service not performed by Law Enforcement. In order to
perform these functions without increasing the tax burden on all
taxpayers, an assessment is charged for those services that their
operation may cause a need for.
Aren’t these costs covered by taxes?
Taxes are collected for a structure minimally
one full year after a structure is completed and assessed. This means
that taxes for the Fire Department services are not available to provide
these services for two years after the structures are built.
Calls for service are highest when structures are under construction.
What are these funds used for?
Plan Review/Inspection fees are used to provide
future inspection services, specialized equipment for trench, below
ground, and collapse rescue operations. The costs to provide these
services are primarily covered by the assessment of fees for those
services to the individuals and businesses that create their
need. These funds are also used to help provide Fire/EMS personnel
around the clock for all residents of the district.
