Scheduled school fire drills

To assure the safety of our children and
practice our response…

Aid, CPR, & Safety classes by request
TOPt
Scheduling is done by request. Anyone needing a
CPR class can contact us. We like to have at least four people per class
and no more than eight. If it is an individual who requests a class we
will advertise for more interested people. We are affiliated with the
American Heart Association. We strongly urge new parents in the township
to call and schedule a CPR class with us! We also do a first aid class
to scout groups, businesses, or school groups on request.
Youthful Fire setter
counseling
TOPt
We have a Youthful Fire Setter Intervention
Specialist. If you know of a child or have a child that you suspect is
setting fires or is curious about fire, you can contact us. We will do
an interview with the child, the parents, and one with both the child
and the parents. We will then evaluate the interviews and determine
which category the child appears to be in. There are three categories of
fire setters. The low risk or curiosity based, the moderate risk, and
the definite risk. We will then develop a program to help the child
based on these findings.
Annual seniors fire/safety luncheon
TOPt
Once a year we have a senior luncheon and safety
workshop at our station. We do a program about senior fire and medical
safety, do blood pressure checks, a station and apparatus tour, and try
to focus on one major safety issue each year. We also have lunch and
dessert. We give out free smoke detectors to those that need them.
Safe babysitters
program
TOPt
This is a class designed to prepare teens to
baby-sit. We teach the children rescue breathing, first aid, and basic
issues with childcare. We also give them alternative ways for food
preparation, not using the stove or microwave. We try to have a police
officer come to the class to talk about safety, and we bring in an
infant and a toddler for the teens to interact with. This class is an
eight hour class, and is available to all teens in Newport Township
between the ages of ten and fourteen years. If you have anyone
interested in the class, you can call the station.

School Safety
Always Matters programs
TOPt
Our philosophy – “Fire and children – a deadly,
frightening combination… but, a combination whose tragic results can be
avoided through proper fire safety education.” This program was started
in 1997, because we felt it was a good program. Our goal is to reduce
the current alarming statistics of fire loss, both life and property, by
using fire safety education in every classroom.
This is a four-week program, intended to remind
the second graders about basic fire safety and the importance of a home
escape plan. We also stress to them the importance of not hiding or
being afraid of firefighters. The last week of class is to show the
students our apparatus.
KNOX BOX Rapid Entry
System
TOPt
This is a box that is located outside of
commercial or residential buildings that contains a key to the building.
It allows the fire department to enter the building when an alarm is
received there. It is very beneficial to the elderly or physically
disabled. There is a box on all our equipment that is tied in to our
dispatcher. When we arrive on the scene, we call our dispatcher and
request them to activate the Knox box at the given address. The times
are recorded when we enter the building and when we leave and lock the
building back up.

Station tours by request
TOPt
Station tours are done by request for school
groups, home schooled children, day care centers, neighborhoods, or
individuals who are in Newport Township.
Community
event/block party appearances by request
TOPt
We will go to block parties or events in the
community. We show off the equipment, and give the public the
opportunity to talk to our firefighters and ask questions. We are in
service at these events, and sometimes required to respond to calls from
them. We also hand out goodies when we are finished.
Smoke detector
information
TOPt
National standards recommend that smoke detector batteries be replaced
twice a year, and smoke detectors be replaced every 10 years. Illinois
law requires smoke detectors on each floor and within 15' of every
sleeping area.
Carbon Monoxide detector
information
TOPt
Illinois law requires a carbon monoxide detector in each residential
structure. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed where they will
alert the occupants, instead of near possible sources. Carbon monoxide
detectors should be replaced every 5 years.
Neighborhood drills
TOPt
Every summer we schedule some special drills in
the neighborhoods, designed for the public. These drills are to show the
public how we address some of the issues unique to our township. For
instance, we have no municipal water and subsequently utilize dry
hydrants and portable tanks. We also refresh the public on proper use of
fire extinguishers and the importance of working smoke detectors in the
home.
